10 Natural Weight Loss Tips
If you want to lose weight safely and naturally, the following ten natural weight loss tips should help you get started.
1. Reduce your calorie intake gradually, and reasonably. If you go on an extremely low calorie diet, you will end up gaining it back later. Your body needs a certain number of calories and nutrients to function optimally.
2. Don’t be in a hurry to “lose 20 pounds in 10 days” or some other formula that you may have seen advertised. Weight loss should be part of a long term lifestyle change that has you looking and feeling better. You have the rest of your life to lose weight, and the healthier you are the longer this will be! No need to rush.
3. Exercise helps, of course, but you can also increase your physical activities during work and other everyday activities. If it’s not too far, walk (or ride a bike) to the store instead of driving; take the stairs instead of the elevator; during breaks take a walk outdoors instead of sitting at your desk eating a donut. If you have a job where you socialize during breaks, find partners to walk with you.
4. Learn to eat healthy snacks. What you eat between meals has a bigger impact on your weight than you may realize. For snacks, try fresh or organic dried fruit, nuts, yogurt, vegetable (instead of potato) chips and high quality energy bars, the kind without lots of sugar.
5. Eat healthy fats and cut out unhealthy ones. Your body needs fat, but not the kind in junk foods. Some sources of healthy fats include oils such as fish, olive and coconut oil. Other foods with good fats include avocados and nuts such as almonds, walnuts and cashews. You can also get these as nut butters. Avoid trans fats, such as hydrogenated oils. If you eat animal products, which contain saturated fats, try to get all natural or organic.
6. If you are a meat eater, look into high protein, low carb diets. You may want to try the paleo diet, which is based on the pre-agricultural revolution diet of paleolithic humans. You have to cut out most carbs and grains for this diet. You can eat meat, but it should be from natural, grass-fed animals, not corn fed.
7. Eat more raw foods. You don’t have to go on an all raw foods diet (you can try this if you want, but many people find this too restrictive). Fruits, nuts, vegetables and seeds can be very healthy and low in calories.
8. Pay attention to your beverages as well as foods. Water is always the best thirst quencher. Try to avoid soda, even diet sodas; many artificial sweeteners have been linked with various health problems. Fruit juice is okay in moderation, but even natural sugar can be fattening in large quantities. If you drink coffee, try green tea instead. It has less caffeine and has powerful antioxidants which can help you to burn calories more efficiently.
9. Diversify your exercising. This can keep you interested and also gives you a variety of benefits. Weight training is good for the bones and strength training; aerobic exercise helps you burn calories; yoga or pilates is great for flexibility.
You may also want to try exercise or medicine balls and mini trampolines, both easy and versatile exercises you can do at home.
10. Get enough rest. Strange as it may sound, research shows that not getting enough sleep can cause you to gain weight. Eating a better diet (and not eating a large meal after around 7 at night), getting more exercise and avoiding caffeine at night can help. Don’t stay up too late watching TV or surfing the internet; the sleep will do you more good!
